vacation

BACKWARDS WORD OF THE DAY

Summer words continue with vacation. Yes, vacation is a term found in one WordBloom definition. The ancient Greek word is schole which can mean anything from loitering as in withholding work to leisure as a vacation from physical employment. That vacation from physical employment is specifically a “school”. Now that’s backwards! We take a vacation from work and school. The ancients took a vacation (or a time of leave) and went to school. The related idea occurs once in the Bible in Acts 19:9.
