The Hebrew word kaphar is used to describe atonement or the forgiveness of sins, but the literal meaning is covering something in tar or asphalt.  That’s pretty cool imagery for what God does with our sin when we put our faith in Christ. Scripture talks about our sin being removed from us, “as far as the east is from the west,” rather than it being just covered up but we also see multitudes of sins being covered up in James 5:20, not to mention, the sacrificial blood getting sprinkled all over the mercy seat.

In any case, I just imagine a big ol’ mixer backing up to a pothole of Sin and dumping asphalt all over it.  It entertains me.
