FIG-INFORMER WORD OF THE DAY

Today’s word is formed from the Greek words sukos (fig) and phaino (to show). In ancient Greece there were laws against the exportation of figs, and some people would try to blackmail individuals involved in this trade. These fine folks came to be known as sukophantoi, or “fig-informers,” from which we get the English word “sycophant”. By application, the Biblical text uses this word to denote the act of falsely informing or accussing.
