There are great new writers explaining age-old truths to a new generation.  There are definitely some great new works.  There have been some really poor “old” works but most of these aren’t used because time has shown their weakness.

We can’t say that everything old is good but we can say that every great resource has stood the test of time.  After a couple of thousand years of Christianity and over 5,000 years of history prior to that, there is little “new thought” regarding our faith.

The Bible exhorts us to to test the new against what we already know, to test the thoughts of others against the clear words of the Bible.  Talk to a trusted pastor or leader when picking study tools.  Read a review. In the same way that you would want to avoid making an emotional decision about which car to purchase, you’ll want to follow these steps to establish the credibility of Bible scholarship:

1. Research. Do you research – read multiple texts written on the subject. Read multiple translations of the Bible to discern the differences.

2. Consult. Read reviews and research by others. Talk to a member of the clergy. In all decisions, we are instructed to seek wise counsel.

3. Pray. Ask God for wisdom and perception. Ask Him to illuminate the Bible for you.
