Understanding is Easy with Seven Simple Rules

Here is a classic, simplified list of study tips from one of those great “old guys” who wrote a bunch of “great resources:”

  • Interpret the part by the whole.
  • Scripture interprets Scripture so the whole remains consistent.
  • The clear interprets the unclear.
  • The primary interprets the secondary.
  • Something stated many times interprets that which is only said once or rarely.
  • Follow the literal meaning – Go with the obvious meaning before a “hidden” message.
  • Simple sense is better than contrived.
  • Always watch out for verses that make you feel justified to “feel the way you feel.”  Facts rarely “feel” but rather teach us in deeper, slower ways.
